"The Many Faces of Amy Jo" Girls' Life, October/November 1998 Page 26 Introduction: Amy Jo Johnson, Julie on the WB's Felicity, has been a ghost, a vampire, and a Power Ranger. She's a ready made Halloween Party! Girls' Life How did you get your start acting? Amy Jo Johnson I've wanted to act since I was 7. I started off being a gymnast. I loved competing and performing in front of people. When I auditioned for Power Rangers, I think that helped me get the part. Girls' Life Which Power Ranger were you? ((Umm...duh!)) Amy Jo Johnson I was Kimberly -- The Pink one! ((::applause:  )Girls' Life What other roles have you had? Amy Jo Johnson I did a movie called Susie Q that plays a lot on the Disney Channel. Then I did two movies of the week, one called Killing Mr. Griffin and another called Perfect Body about an anorexic gymnast. Girls' Life Do you have a favorite? Amy Jo Johnson I loved Perfect Body, because one of the stunt doubles was Kristie Phillips. She was my hero as a gymnast, and then I got to work with her so that was fun. Girls' Life Did you have a stunt double? Amy Jo Johnson Oh, yeah. I did all the basic moves and stuff, but the hard stuff I couldn't do anymore. I hadn't done gymnastics in about five years, so I was a little rusty! Girls' Life In Susie Q, who did you play? ((Duh Again!)) Amy Jo Johnson I playes Susie. The movie was about a girl in the 50's of her way to the prom who gets in a car crash. She comes back in the 90's as a ghost and goes on all these adventures. I wear a pink prom dress through the whole movie. ((Pink? Coincidence, I think not!)) Girls' Life In one of your most {recent} films, Cold Hearts, you played a vampire. Amy Jo Johnson Yeah. It was a blast playing a vampire! I almost felt like one, because we would sleep all day and shoot at night. Girls' Life Was it hard to get into that creepy role? Amy Jo Johnson Not at all. I played a good vampire, though. I didn't like to suck people's blood, so I went to blood banks. Actually, I end up dying halfway through, because I get hypnotized by this bad vampire, and I go out and suck some people's blood. I feel so bad I lay out in the sun and turn to dust. Girls' Life Yikes! Tell us about Felicity. Amy Jo Johnson I'm so excited! The cast is awesome. the girl who plays Felicity, Keri Russell, is a really cool chick --No ego. And she's extremely talented. And the other guys, Scott Speedman and Scott Foley, we all get along really well. And I love that I've graduated from high school in it! Girls' Life What's it like playing Julie? Amy Jo Johnson She's a lot like me. They're going to have her play the guitar, and I play guitar and sing. I went to school in New York too, so I can really identify. Girls' Life Do you have a real-life friendship like yours and Felicity's in the show? Amy Jo Johnson Yeah, my best friend in the world is this girl Johanna I grew up with. You've got to have girlfriends -- they're the best! Girls' Life Spill the info on your band Valhalla. Amy Jo Johnson We haven't recorded a demo yet. I write the music, and it's like acidy folk. I dig it! Someday you guys will hear it. Girls' Life How do you find time to be both a musician and an actor? Amy Jo Johnson That's where it's going to get tricky! I love acting as much as I love music, but I know it's difficult to do both. Girls' Life How about some advice on how to balance two projects you really love? Amy Jo Johnson Have fun. If you put in the work and you're dedicated to what you're doing, then the balancing thing will happen. Girls' Life Fave Halloween costume? Amy Jo Johnson I love being pixies and fairies. I have some wings I wear every year. Girls' Life And you're flying high, Amy Jo! |
