Chris Leary Well, today's guest is nothing short of a Fox Kids Superstar what do you say we all give a huge round of applause to the Pink Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson! Sound FX: Applause.
CL Yes, all right. Well now that's a good welcome. Now look Amy Jo using the titles of your favorite movies, why don't you talk about, like, how do you describe Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie? Like in your own words.
Amy Jo Kinda reminds me a little bit of the Wizard of Oz in a way, and Star Wars.
CL Uh huh, Well like everyone of course knows you as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger from Angel Grove, but how about Amy Jo Johnson? Uh, I don't know, what do you like to do? Where do you like to hang around? Uh, where are you from?
AJ Hey, I'm from Massachusetts and I wanted to be an actress since I was seven years old and when I turned nine-teen I just moved to New York City.
CL Wow, you like just picked up and moved to New York just to become an actress?
AJ You know what, I didn't know if I wanted to be an actress or a singer, or a painter, but I'm doing all three right now, so I'm psyched. But I don't know; I just always had this thing, you know what it started off, I think, with an attention thing, I really wanted the attention.
CL [Laughs.] Right.
AJ Then I really fell in love with acting. Because I love it so much.
CL Yeah obviously. Well you're good at it. But now that you've achieved that fame, like do you still have time for like your friends?
AJ I hang out with all my friends and yep, nothing's changed that way at all.
CL Well you mentioned earlier that one of the things you wanted to was like become a singer. What kind of music to you sing? Or play or do you like?
AJ Um, it's like I play guitar and I sing and write all my own songs, and usually the words come from my journal so there, you know, really from my heart and my life.
CL Wow.
AJ And I stay to a mixture between like Indigo Girls and Sinade O'Conner and that kinda women's kinda music out right now.
CL Oh, O.K. women's music, I like women's music. Now look kids all over the world, they watch Power Rangers and they look up to you guys as role models. Do you like having that responsibility?
AJ Personally, I guess I just have to look as such, obviously it's a really a positive thing, but not take it, ooooh my gosh I'm famous, but look at it as... we are like such positive role models for kids all over the world that it's such a neat thing to be a part of.
CL Speaking of being a part of. Do you have a man that's a part of your life Amy Jo?
AJ Well, I had one, and I just kind of just broke up with him. [Laughs.]
CL OOOHHH! Oh-Ho-Ho!
AJ I'm a free-women. [Laughs.]
CL Oh, free-women.
SFX: {Alpha 5} Aye yi, yi yi, yi yi, yi
CL Hey look, let's talk about the negative influences some people think the Power Rangers have on kids. What do you think about that?
AJ Kids have been playing cowboys and indians for...
CL (interjects) ...right...
AJ ...how long?
CL Good Point.
AJ ...or when, you know; and now Power Rangers is the popular thing and that's what they call it. Kids aren't doing anything different. You know. I know I ran around the living room and kicked and punched and did all kinds of stuff.
CL OH!
AJ But Power Rangers didn't exist, so I didn't call it that.
CL Ha Ha see Amy Jo, she was a tough one even when she was a kid. Love that. What do you think, Amy Jo Johnson, huh? Big Cheer?
SFX Applauding & cheers.
CL Yes, one of the Fox Kids Network Superstars, and we have her right here on the Countdown. Thanks again Amy.
