Academy Award nominee, Emmy® Award and Golden Globe-winner Burt Reynolds ("Boogie Nights") and Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award nominee Bruce Dern ("Coming Home") will star in Hallmark Channel's two-hour original movie event, "Hard Ground", a gritty drama scheduled to air Saturday, July 12 (9-11 p.m. E/P). Set in the Arizona desert, the movie will also feature Seth Peterson and Amy Jo Johnson in the cast.
Written by Frank Q. Dobbs and David S. Cass, Sr. and directed by Dobbs, "Hard Ground" tells the story of a legendary half-breed bounty hunter, John McKay (Reynolds), who has spent the past eleven years wrongly incarcerated in the hellish Yuma Territorial Prison. But, after a sadistic inmate masterminds a prison break, and then launches a killing spree, McKay is recruited to track him down by the local sheriff (Dern) - the same man who sent McKay to prison.
When the two team up to find the killer and his band of desperate men, McKay discovers that the one thing he has left in life, his son, Joshua (Peterson), is now a deputy who is also tracking the dangerous criminals.
Reynolds recently starred in "Driven", with Sylvester Stallone, and directed by Renny Harlin.
Among his many feature films are "The Crew", "Mystery Alaska", "Striptease", "Deliverance", "Starting Over", "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing", "Semi-Tough", "Hooper", "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", "The Longest Yard", "Smokey and the Bandit", and "Sharky's Machine". Mr. Reynolds also starred in Hallmark Channel's highly-rated original miniseries "Johnson County War".
For television, Reynolds has enjoyed an auspicious career as an actor, director and producer. Among his finest endeavors in this medium is the hit series "Evening Shade" (as star, executive producer and director). For this series he won his ninth People's Choice Award, the Emmy Award for Best Performance in a Comedy and the Golden Globe Award for a Comedy. Dern has starred in the films "Coming Home", "The Great Gatsby" (for which he was also nominated for an Academy Award), "The Glass House", "All The Pretty Horses", "The Haunting", "After Dark, My Sweet", "Down Periscope" and "That Championship Season". Among Mr. Dern's television credits are the movies "Hard Time: The Premonition", "Perfect Prey", "Comfort, Texas" and "A Mother's Prayer". But lovers of westerns will remember Bruce Dern's appearances on such popular TV westerns as "High Chapparel", "The Big Valley", "Rawhide", "The Virginian", "Gunsmoke" and "Wagon Train", to name a few.
Peterson, who plays Joshua McKay, is best known to television audiences as Robbie Hansen on the series "Providence". Mr. Peterson has had guest-starring roles in "Arsenio", "Clueless", "Relativity", "Beverly Hills, 90210" and "Profiler". His feature-film credits include "Godzilla", "Can't Hardly Wait" and the independent "Dumped".
Amy Jo Johnson plays Elizabeth, the lone survivor of a family slain by the killers. Looking for revenge, she rashly joins the hunt for the desperadoes. Ms. Johnson starred as college coed Julie Emrick on the popular television series "Felicity". She also starred in the television movie "Susie Q", was the Pink Ranger in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" and "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie".
Hallmark Entertainment presents "Hard Ground" in association with Alpine Median Productions. Robert Halmi, Jr., Larry Levinson and Nick Lombardo are executive producers of the film. Randy Pope and Lincoln Lageson produce. Pope's credits include producing television series "Family Affair", along with co-producing such recent telefilms as "Just For Kicks", "Recipe for Disaster II", "Double Trouble" and "Hangfire". Lageson co-produced the telefilms "Hard Time: Hostage Hotel" and "Hard Time: The Premonition" and had roles in both movies.
Frank Q. Dobbs and David S. Cass, Sr. co-wrote the screenplay, and Dobbs directed. Dobbs produced the telefilm "The Last Cowboy" and the miniseries "Johnson County War". With Cass, Sr., a legendary stuntman in the industry, he co-wrote the teleplays for "Gambler V: Playing For Keeps" and "Rio Diablo". Cass, Sr. was also a co-producer on the film "Texas Rangers" and directed Hallmark Channel's original movie "Straight From The Heart", set to premiere Friday, February 9 (9-11 p.m. E/P).
