Before taking on her current role as the down to earth Julie Emerick on WB's Felicity, Amy Jo Johnson spent three years as Kimberly Hart, the original Pink Ranger on Fox's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. And while Jonhson, 29, expects Felcity to do more for her career, she admits that the show is not doing as much for abs. "Being active was part of my job", she says of playing the back-flipping ranger. These days Johnson must squeeze fitness into her shooting schedule and says she "hates the gym routine". No surprise, considering how much time she devoted to to it as a child. From age 7 to 16, the Dennis, Mass., native was a competitive gymnast, and at age 12 she earned a Class One ranking (just below Olympic status), but a broken elbow and other arm injuries ended her career when she was 16. Given Johnson's athletic background --and perhaps because she played a rock climbing high school student in the 1997 NBC movie Killing Mr. Griffin--it's not suprising that she eagerly accepted our invitation to spend a day at an indoor rock climbing wall with Eric Jackson, a trainer at Hangar 18 in Upland, Calif. "It sounds like an earthy-crunchy thing to do", she says. "But it's exhilarating. It's hard hanging on to the wall, but when you reach the ceiling, it's a rush". Johnson also gets a rush from her side gig as the lead singer and guitarist of Valhalla, an unsigned band whose music she has described as folk acid. We only hope she's still able to play guitar after scaling the 42-foot indoor wall five times in one afternoon. "my forearms are numb", says Johnson. "But I can't wait to try rock climbing outside."
