USA Today October 13th, 1998 From the "Life" Section "JULIE PROVES JOHNSON'S GOT RANGE"
As Kimberly, the Pink Ranger in TV's "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers", Amy Jo Johnson's acrobatic fighting was adored by pre-adolescents everywhere. That was a mixed blessing, she now says, because after 2 1/2 years of playing a Ranger, it was "hard to convince casting agents that I could also act". Johnson, 26, is best known as an anorexic gymnast in the NBC movie "Perfect Body". She also has a part in the Steve Prefontaine biopic "Without Limits". But her role as Julie Emmerick - who struggles to resolve her friendship with Felicity and her interest in Ben, the boy Felicity has a crush on - is offering her her best shot yet to show what she can do. How? By acting less. "I used to really try really, really hard" to get into a role, she says, adding that she's not impressed with much of her previous work. Tonight's big blowup with Felicity is decidedly unhistrionic: Johnson punctuates her anger with only a severe look and a sharp turn on her heel. If that restraint is allowed to slip anywhere, it's when Johnson sings "trippy, folky music" with her band Valhalla. "It's acid folk. Is that a category?" The group's next gig is November 8 at Genghis Cohen, an L.A. restaurant.
